America's Love Affair With Cars Is Over?

In response to this USA Today article that I read just now:

The author totally misses the point about why less people in the US are using cars, and my response is this:

Love affair over? It's the economy, stupid.  The gov'ts cooked-up numbers don't tell half the story of how bad the economy is now.  People are giving up cars in favor of other forms of transportation b/c of $.  Gasoline consumption is at a 12-year low even though the population has grown in the US over that time and more people are able to drive.  The fact is people are less and less able to afford it with high-inflation (hid in gov't numbers) and high unemployment (again hid in gov't numbers).
