The Patriot Act Debate: Newt vs Paul

Out of all the GOP candidates, Ron Paul is the only candidate who opposes the Patriot Act. Every other candidate supports it. In the last GOP presidential candidates debate on our country's defense, Ron Paul went back and forth with Newt Gingrich regarding the Patriot Act. I think it was good that the moderator let them both give their opinions and provide rebuttals. See Newt vs Paul on the Patriot Act here on Youtube.

The people who support the Patriot Act - like Newt Gingrich - ignore the fact that the Patriot Act limits our liberty. In fact they say the Patriot Act does not limit our liberty. My response to them is:

> The Patriot Act does not limit your liberty? It does not allow the spooks into your phone, computer, your GPS system, your OnStar on your car, your "smart panel", into your electricity habits?

> It doesn't allow them to pull you over on the highway with no warrant, search your stuff, bring out the "contraband" dogs, and pull you out of the car?

> It doesn't allow the feds to listen to every conversation you have on any type of media available?

> It does not violate Habeus Corpus, right to a speedy trial, right to be charged with a crime?

> It does not violate your Constitutional right and state that you can be arrested, held indefinitely, labeled an enemy combatant, tortured, and denied legal council?

> It doesn't allow for them to use high tech listening devices that can record conversations in your home from 1,000 feet away?

> It doesn't allow them to stick their hands down people's pants in airports, fondle your children, completely strip search you at the airport and lock you in airport holding blocks without a charge, crime, or inference of either?

> And finally...have you ever even read the Patriot Act? (Interesting fact: many of the members of the Congress who voted on the Patriot Act openly admitted that they had little time to even READ the Patriot Act in its entirety).

I think one of the Founding Fathers of America, Benjamin Franklin said it best. I leave you with this quote from Benjamin Franklin:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty."
