Socialism in America: A Failed Experiment

Not many people know about America's first experiment with socialism. America's first experiment with socialism, the Plymouth Bay Colony, ended in failure, and our most successful colonies - New York, Virginia, Massachusetts - were begun primarily as commercial entities. When the founding fathers gathered to write the Constitution, they represented capitalist states and granted the federal government severely limited powers.

The economy of the Plymouth Bay Colony worked as follows. For its first two-and-a-half years, the economy of Plymouth Plantation took the form of a communal system. There was neither private property nor division of labor. Food was grown for the town and distributed equally. The colony exemplified a socialist society. By 1623, the Plymouth Plantation was facing starvation. That's right - starvation! This showed socialism failed and it's a lesson that the country's leaders should read about. (From there the Plymouth Plantation's leaders took another course after this, allotting private land plots which made productivity increase).

Obama - or at least his speech writer - clearly doesn't understand socialism has never worked and never will work in history. Here’s a cut from his speech last week in Kansas:

“And their philosophy is simple: We are better off when everybody is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules. I am here to say they are wrong. I'm here in Kansas to reaffirm my deep conviction that we're greater together than we are on our own. I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share.”

“Fair share” is another way of saying Obama is an advocate of socialism without outright saying he is. Again, this is what his speech writer doesn’t get – socialism never worked and it never will work. Again they should read about the example of the Plymouth Bay Colony. They should read about socialist Russia and how it failed. I can’t make this stuff up!

As the leader of our country we need someone who understands history, understands how this country became great, understands the Constitution, understands "crony" or "corrupt" capitalism is bad, and understands socialism is the wrong answer to getting the country's economy on a stronger foundation. Obama surely is not the answer. Neither is Newt.
