Just like past presidents before him, our President proclaimed that we
need to raise the debt ceiling because America always pays its bills. And like past presidents before him, our President is completely wrong.
The reason we have to raise the debt
ceiling is because we never pay our bills. We can't afford to pay our bills, so instead we want to raise the debt ceiling so we can borrow more money instead
of paying our bills. The threat is if we
don't raise the debt ceiling then the world will realize how broke we are
because if we can't borrow more money then we have the default. Why don't we deal with this now?
Keep in mind, the government collects over $2 trillion a year in tax "revenue". This should be plenty to run the government! What I'd like to see the government do is cut out all the redistribution of wealth plus the unnecessary departments that arguably undermine our success as a nation. This would be a start, and if we don't start somewhere shrinking the government then where are we going to end up in the future?
